Online advertising works most effectively by tracking readers’ visits and online behavior. These attributes are tracked through “cookies” which are then passed through ad code to advertisers when an online ad auction takes place. Cookies play a large role in determining which campaigns and budgets are best suited for which reader. This tracking has been found in many countries to be an overstep of consumer privacy. Governments and organizations have legally fought back by requiring cookie consent agreements to be posted on every webpage with online advertising.
In 2018, the European Union passed its protection requirement called GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation.) A GDPR notification asks for consent to gather data/information from an EU visitor. The requirement was permitted to be a small pop-up where users could accept cookies on the site, but as of the fall of 2020, the interest in privacy protection has increased and the EU now requires a larger Cookie Management Platform banner.
Much like the GDPR, as of January 1, 2020, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is a state statute intended to enhance privacy rights and consumer protection for residents of California, United States.
